Meeting the team behind the new venue at Edinburgh Fringe
An exciting new venue is appearing at Edinburgh Fringe this year. While the World’s largest arts festival is already a rather crowded space, Teatro Fisico is carving out a niche position by focusing exclusively on physical theatre.
Their offering is limited to five shows, each rooted in the tradition of Jacques Lecoq, whose approach places movement, rhythm and the poetry of the body at the heart of theatrical storytelling. The shows will be staged in an intimate 45-seat studio space within the Fruitmarket Gallery, just a stone's throw from Waverley Station and the Royal Mile.
Director Tom Corradini explains:
“Physical theatre is not a style — it is a universal way of thinking about the human being on stage. Teatro Fisico brings this vision to Edinburgh. From Alba, Piedmont — where I founded the Alba International Physical Theatre Festival — to Alba, the Gaelic name for Scotland.”
The company's largely non-verbal, minimalist productions transcend language barriers and are readily transferable to audiences around the world.
The Artistic Team
· Tom Corradini, trained in Lecoq technique, has dedicated his career to physical theatre, clown and movement-based performance. As comfortable speaking in English as his native Italian, he writes and produces all shows under the banner Tom Corradini Teatro.
· Isabella Egizi is an American actor, writer and director, with stage and screen credits in the United States, United Kingdom and Italy. Her theatre work encompasses physical theatre, site-specific performance and musical theatre.
· Magda Pohl is an Italian-German actor, also with Lecoq training. She has performed lead and supporting roles in both theatre and television.
· Nike Redding is an American performer, director and writer specialising in physical theatre. His work explores vocal and physical expression, musicality and the use of poetic text.
The Productions
· Hamlet Prince Of Denmark. Two actors have spent months preparing a lavish opening night of Hamlet, only for an accident to leave the rest of the cast stranded. Undeterred, the pair attempt to stage Shakespeare's most complex tragedy using nothing but their own bodies, ingenuity and sheer desperation.
· A Woman In Berlin 1945. As the Red Army advances through Berlin, a young woman finds herself trapped amid the ruins of a collapsing society. Her testimony reveals the largely silenced history of the mass violence inflicted on German women in the final weeks of the war.
· Mister Jackpot. By day, Mister Jackpot endures the monotony of a garden equipment company. By night he dreams of wealth, luxury and success. Then a chance encounter with a slot machine changes everything. An innocent pastime rapidly spirals into compulsion in this exploration of pathological gambling.
· Caligula. A professor of ancient history is admitted to a psychiatric ward following a psychotic episode. In the grip of hallucinations, he is convinced he is the Emperor Caligula. Aided by a clown nurse and an autistic musician, he relives the rise and fall of Rome's most notorious emperor..
· Shaolin Clown. A non-verbal physical comedy show. A Shaolin monk rediscovers his childlike spirit through his Zen practice, finding a world still full of surprises and meaning in apparently insignificant small things.
